Project Summary

This research project assesses the implementation of a pilot project of screening of Down’s syndrome in primary healthcare facilities in five provinces including Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Nakhon Sawan, Khon Kaen, and Songkhla. Findings from the assessment will be used to improve the service delivery as well as to explore possibilities of scaling up the service in other provinces.

This study also assess the outcomes of the service provision, and service provision in practice by using screening for Down’s syndrome’s guidelines developed by (1) committees at provincial level and (2) The Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, as references.

A mixed-method approach is employed for in this study. Both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods are used to explore successful factors influencing service provision. Service providers, users (pregnant women) and policy makers are included in the in-depth interview. Health facilities representing high and low acceptance rate of the service are included in the investigation.

A comprehensive review of literature is performed to collect data concerning service provision, including management system, screening services, limitations of service delivery and information or trainings needed for program development. Findings from this research study will be used to develop guidelines for management of Down’s Syndrome’s screening service delivery and propose to the National Health Security Office (NHSO) for the improvement of the service management system basing on the pilot provinces and to consider scaling up the service in other provinces.
